   Newsletter time again!! I am having so much fun bringing you all these great recipes and tips

     I made a Yahoo group just for The Recipe Den I hope you will join. There will be more recipes, and tips plus chat and link to exchange http://groups.yahoo.com/group/recipeden

Food Tips:

     If you happen to run out of ketchup, use 1 cup tomato sauce, 1/2 cup sugar and 2 tablespoons vinegar. Mix well. 

     Cottage cheese will keep fresh longer if it's refrigerated upside down in its original carton.

     Line your crock pot with a cooking bag and you'll have no cleanup at all. Spray the inside of the liner with cooking spray before you fill it to make cleanup easier.


Broccoli  Soup
 
  • 1 bunch broccoli
  • 1 c. chopped celery
  • 1 c. chopped onion
  • 1/8 to 1/4 lb. Velveeta cheese
  • 3 c. milk (2% or 1%)

    --SAUCE:--

  • 3/4 c. flour
  • 2 c. milk

         Cook broccoli until tender.  Drain off water.  Add 3 cups milk.  Add cheese.  Mix 3/4 cup flour into 2 cups milk for sauce (may use more flour).  Add to vegetables with salt and pepper to taste.  Cook 15 to 20 minutes.  Stir frequently. 


  • Diabetic

    Baked Chicken For One
     
  • 1 (3 oz.) chicken breast, boned & skinned
  • 2 tbsp. (any brand) bottled diet
  • Italian dressing

         Marinate chicken in dressing overnight in covered casserole.  Bake for one hour at 350 degrees. No additional seasonings are necessary. Very tender and juicy.


    Flank Steak With Gravy

  • 1 flank steak, about 3 pounds
  • 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 packet onion soup mix
  •      Combine soups along with 1 soup can full of water. Put a couple of spoonfuls in bottom of slow cooker. Rub flank steak with fresh pepper and roll it up loosely so it fits into crock pot. Cover with rest of soup mixture. Cook 8-10 hours on low. Note: You may prepare stuffing (scratch or a mix like Stovetop) and shape flank steak around it. Slice to serve, with stuffing in the middle, and spoon gravy over top. Yield: 6 servings

    Muffin Pan Crayons

  • Old crayons (bits and pieces)
  • Muffin pans
  • Muffin cup liners or "non-stick" spray

         Peel crayons.  Line/spray muffin pan.  Put crayon pieces in muffin cups.  Separate colors for single color chunks.  Mix colors for rainbow ones.  Bake at 200 degrees until melted.  Cool, peel off liners if used.


    All purpose Salad Dressing

  • 2 tb Wine
  • 2 tb Vinegar
  • 1 tb Dijon Mustard
  • 1/2 c Olive Oil
  • 1/4 ts Dried Oregano
  • 1/4 ts Dried Parsley
  • 1 Clove Garlic, minced

         In a small bowl whisk together wine, vinegar, and mustard until blended. Slowly pour in olive oil, whisking constantly. Whisk in oregano, parsley, and garlic. Use for a dressing on mixed greens



  •   Glory Bars

     

  • Mix up: 2 sticks margarine, melted
  • 2 c. graham cracker crumbs
  • 2 c. peanut butter
  • 3 c. powdered sugar

         Pat into greased jelly roll pan.  Melt 12 ounce chocolate chips and spread on top.  Refrigerate only until solid.  Cut into squares. 


    Homemade Soap

     

  • Use enamel kettles only. 1 can lye
  • 2 1/2 pt. water (warm?)
  • 13 1/2 c. (6 lb.) melted fat (not chicken fat or mineral oil)
  • Oil of fragrance

         Make solution of lye and water.  Slowly add and stir in melted fat and add fragrance as desired.  Cool to 85 degrees.  TO MOLD:  Line wood box with wet cloth.  Pour in soap, cover with thin board and wool blanket and let cool slowly.  Cut with string and let age.  Grind for laundry use.

    Wontons

     

  • 1 pkg. Wontons
  • 1 lb. hamburger
  • 1 c. chopped carrots
  • 1 c. chopped celery
  • 1/2 c. chopped green onions
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. Lawry's seasoning salt

         Mix all ingredients together.  Moisten all 4 edges of skins.  Place 1 tablespoon mixture in center and fold into triangle.  Deep fry until golden brown.
